AISI 303

Free Machining Austenitic Stainless Steel

Material Overview

AISI 303 - Free Machining Stainless Steel

Material Type

Type: Austenitic, non-magnetic in annealed condition

Key Benefit: Highest machinability among all austenitic grades

Chemistry Highlights

  • Higher sulfur content (0.15-0.35%) for improved machinability
  • Chromium-nickel base for corrosion resistance
  • Free-machining additives for excellent chip breaking

Corrosion Resistance

Good corrosion resistance, slightly lower than 304 due to sulfur additions. Suitable for atmospheric exposure and mild chemical environments.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 600-750 MPa
Hardness: 180-220 HB
Machinability: Excellent (Best in class)

Applications

  • High-speed machining parts and precision turned components
  • Fittings, fasteners, and threaded components
  • Precision gears for food and pharmaceutical equipment
  • Valve components and pump parts
  • Aircraft fittings and hardware
  • Automatic screw machine products

Advantages

  • Superior Machinability: Fastest cutting speeds among austenitic stainless steels
  • Excellent Surface Finish: Bright, smooth finish ideal for precision parts
  • Good Formability: Can be cold worked and formed
  • Non-Magnetic: Suitable for applications requiring non-magnetic properties
  • Cost-Effective: Reduced machining time lowers production costs

Processing Characteristics

  • Welding: Can be welded but not recommended for critical applications
  • Heat Treatment: Cannot be hardened by heat treatment
  • Cold Working: Work hardens moderately during forming
  • Machining: Excellent chip breaking and tool life
